DPA 815 Compositing

Final project for compositing class

Form a group and create a short film with composited elements.

I worked on the morphing in Nuke using the splinewarp node. Also did some duplication with the merge node.

Extra Credit Assignment

For this assignment was got numerous video footage of two men looking towards the horizon at 5 men dressed as soldiers. The multiple videos were of the same 5 men walking towards them at different positions.

We needed to take this footage and make it seem as though a small army was marching towards the 2 men.

For this I merged all the scenes using the merge(max) node in Nuke and used a rotoscope for the mask.

Project 4

For this project we were given multiple maya frames from the “rubber ducky” team.

We had to used the different render passes given to complete a final shot from the short film.

These are some of the images that were composited to make the final video.

Project 3

For this project we had to stabilize a given clip, use tracking on a given clip and use match moving in a given clip.

Stabilization

For this video I used the tracking node in Nuke on the given video to help stabilize the output render.

The original footage was a handheld recording of some people in a moving train.

Tracking

We were given a video on some people using a ski lift. I found some handheld footage of a monkey in a zoo, so I decided to composite the monkey onto one of the lifts.

I had to stabilize the monkey footage then create a matte for the monkey. Then I used the tracking node on the ski lift footage and composited the monkey onto the ski lift.

The monkey images follows the path created from the tracker node.

Match Moving

We were given a scene from the movie “The Last Airbender”.

I used the tracking node in Nuke so that whatever image I chose to composite in the scene will have the same motion path as the camera motion in the shot.

When I put the image in I also needed to create mattes for parts of the clip where a person (or water) was blocking my image. I used a Merge(difference), within Nuke, to control the opacity of the image during these frames.

Project 2

For this project we needed to make 3 composite videos.

A live foreground on a live background video, a live foreground on a CG background video and any foreground element into a movie clip.

Live on Live

I recorded the background and me walking in front of a green screen.

I used the keylight node in nuke to remove the green screen and various color correction filters on the background images and the walking frames.

Could not quite get the lighting to match because the green footage was shot indoors.

For the reflection I created a copy of my walking frames and used the mirror node to flip the image upside down. I also used the math multiply node to make the reflection semi transparent.

I then key framed the reflection so it will always be touching the original walk footage.

I key framed the position, rotation and skew.

Live on CG

I took a video of me walking in front of a green screen (indoors).

I composited the frames, after using keylight, of me walking onto a CG render of the batcave that I found online.

The same technique I used to create the reflection, in the 1st composite, was used to create my shadow in this video.

It was easier to match the lighting/color in this composite since both images are with indoor lighting.

Movie Composite

For my final video I found a clip online from the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

I created a stylized skull for another project and decided to light and animate it in Maya.

I rendered the frames and composited it into the scene using Nuke.

I animated a matte over certain parts of the animation, particularly the frames where the skull and the boys’ arm was overlapping. I then used a merge difference node so the boys’ arm would be in front of the skull.

DPA 815 COMPOSITING

For my 1 assignment I needed to create 3 composited  images.

1 image with a real character and real background

1 image with a CG character render and a real background

Renderman

Final project for the semester in Rendering and Shading. Light and texture a room scene using some Renderman shaders and displacement maps.

Renderman shaders for the guitar body and the floor.

Renderman displacement maps for the floor and the guitar.

The displacement map on the floor can be seen clearer in this image
